“Laurel Canyon meets British Rock’n’Roll with a dash of Blonde Roots.”
Swamp Daisies protagonists Tania Bowra and Melanie Forbes are the lovechildren of classic rock’n’roll, indie, folk and soul.
Tania Bowra is still known for her Aria-nominated debut Heaven and Earth – which also gained TV syncs worldwide. Since then she has enjoyed notable highlights as live performer and touring musician (Eddi Reader/UK, Jimmy Webb, Paul Brady, Jenny Morris), and a session musician and producer (Stiff Gins, Jimmy Little, Packed to the Rafters/Channel7, River of Dreams by Darlene Johnson). Tania has captivated audiences at such iconic venues as The London Palladium, The Famous Spiegeltent (Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and The Sydney Opera House - for Joni: A tribute to the Legendary Joni Mitchell alongside such marquee singers as Wendy Matthews, Katie Noonan and Kristen Berardi.
Songwriter guitarist Melanie Forbes who hails from Te Awamutu - the North Island town that spawned Neil and Tim Finn - first cut her teeth busking with her sister across Europe before being picked up back home by celebrated blues artist Midge Marsden to join his touring band. In Sydney Mel has played for artists such as Shanley Del and Jenny Morris and, with her band Sistermadly (who’ve opened for Air Supply and toured with Dave Dobbyn and Wendy Matthews), has had her songs placed in Aus film classics Looking for Alibrandi, Occasional Coarse Language, and in The Cooks and Doing Time while singles ‘Peace of Mind’ and ‘My House’ reached #2 and #9 respectively on (AUS radio) 2SM’s Super network.
Tania and Mel have been part of each others’ music since back in the day, but left it till 2018 to finally team up, first as ‘Girls on the Avenue’ (with drummer Julia Day), eventually morphing into the beast that is Swamp Daisies with the help of bassist James Moore and drummer James McAuley.
Interspersed between TAFE terms (where Mel and Tania teach music performance) and a bunch of Sydney lockdowns, Swamp Daisies slowly wrangled, wrote and recorded the songs that make up their debut EP ‘Brand New Shoes’. Their sound is variously classic/retro, bluesy and soulful - with even some gypsy reggae in there - all bound together by two singular voices and guitar styles, and a penchant for salty-sweet subject matter.
